We’ve Got 40 Million Reasons to Do More Good

We’ve Got 40 Million Reasons to Do More Good

Let’s not sugarcoat it. On November 1, 2025, nearly 40 million Americans will lose access to SNAP benefits. That’s the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps. And that’s going to hit hard. Families, seniors, kids, people with disabilities, working folks barely getting by, this isn’t just a line item in a federal budget. It’s dinner. It’s breakfast before school. It’s food, plain and simple.

So, what does it mean when 40 million people suddenly don’t have help putting food on the table?

It means we’ve got a crisis on our hands. But more than that, it means we’ve got a responsibility.

Food insecurity isn’t some distant issue. It’s here. It’s in every zip code. It’s the single mom down the street. The older couple trying to survive on Social Security. The teenager hoarding snacks from school lunch because there’s nothing at home. SNAP has been a lifeline for millions. Without it, food banks will be overwhelmed. Schools will see hungrier kids. Hospitals will see more health issues tied to poor nutrition. And your neighbors, maybe even your coworkers, will be quietly struggling just to eat.

This isn’t someone else’s problem. It’s ours.

And let’s be clear. This SNAP cutoff isn’t targeting “lazy people” or “scammers.” Those are lazy stereotypes. This affects children who rely on meals at school and afterschool programs. Seniors on fixed incomes trying to afford both meds and meals. Disabled individuals who already face high living costs. Working families who just can’t stretch their paychecks any further. And when they lose benefits, the ripple effects won’t stop with them. Local stores lose business. Local food banks run dry. Communities weaken.

We can’t sit this one out. We have to do more good. Period. And here’s how:

5 Real Ways You Can Do More Good Right Now

1. Support Your Local Food Bank or Pantry

  • ✅ Find your local food bank through Feeding America’s locator
  • ✅ Donate money if you can. Food banks and pantries often buy in bulk, plus most have the benefit of being tax exempt.
  • ✅ Volunteer your time: packing boxes, sorting donations, helping with delivery
  • ✅ Restock a community fridge near you (search online or check social media for local mutual aid pages)

2. Help Feed Kids

  • ✅ Donate to No Kid Hungry to support school and summer meal programs
  • ✅ Ask your school district about backpack food programs and offer to support or start one
  • ✅ Host a food drive for kid-friendly items: granola bars, mac & cheese, cereal, fruit cups

3. Step Up for Seniors

  • ✅ Volunteer with or donate to Meals on Wheels
  • ✅ Contact local senior centers and ask how you can help with food delivery or grocery drop-offs
  • ✅ Check in on elderly neighbors and ask what they need…don’t wait for them to ask first

4. Advocate and Speak Up

  • ✅ Contact your representatives using Common Cause
  • ✅ Tell them you oppose cuts to food assistance programs
  • ✅ Post about this issue online. Tag your leaders, share real stories, and raise awareness

5. Help Directly in Your Own Backyard

  • ✅ Buy groceries or gift cards for someone you know is struggling
  • ✅ Start a meal train through your church, school, or group chat
  • ✅ Cook extra when making dinner and deliver it to someone nearby
  • ✅ Offer help in local Facebook groups or mutual aid networks

Let’s be real. This isn’t just about food. It’s about dignity. It’s about being the kind of people who refuse to let our neighbors go hungry. Because that’s what this comes down to. Forty million Americans losing food support is a moral failure, but it doesn’t have to be a permanent one. We can step up. We can build systems of care that catch each other when policy drops the ball.

Doing more good isn’t just a motto. It’s a call to action.

We’ve got a choice to make. November 1 isn’t just a date. It’s a turning point. We can either scroll past the headlines or we can stand up and say, “Not on our watch.”

Let’s organize. Let’s donate. Let’s cook. Let’s care. Let’s do more good.

Because no one should be hungry in the richest country in the world. And if we all pitch in, even just a little, we can help turn this crisis into a movement.

Let’s feed our people.
